Obsolete Industrial PCB Redesign for Equipment Still in Service
Boardrecord Engineering · 2026-03-16
List the withdrawn parts before anyone edits the board. A redesign that also 'cleans up' unrelated circuits is harder to qualify on a running machine. The smallest electrical change that restores a purchasable BOM is usually the right scope.
Keep the connector map, the mounting, and the panel interface unless the owner has budget and time to change the harness. Those mechanical facts are why the old board still fits the machine.
Choose substitutes you can buy from authorized distribution, and write the circuit differences beside them. Timing, voltage range, enable polarity, and firmware registers are the usual surprises. If firmware must change, say so in the test list.
The extracted BOM and the redesign BOM are different documents. Mixing them hides which parts were on the sample and which parts are proposed. Maintenance archives should keep both.
Plan a first-article bring-up on the bench, then a supervised run on one machine. Boardrecord delivers the revised design and the test list. Field release stays with the equipment owner.
